Reviews of The Quest

  Offical BE Story Club Review

The Quest is a classic BE story with a fantasy setting. The three main characters are a warrior, a mage, and an elven rogue. The three women have joined together to try to prove themselves and become adventurers in a "male-dominated profession," however each character has their own motivations, which you learn about in the story. And there is a larger theme within the story playing with female stereotypes and fantasy stereotypes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and I think others will too.

You know, there just are not enough fantasy themed stories around these days, which makes this one all the better for just simply existing. It is SO refreshing to finally read a BE story that doesn't take place in a current-day high school or office building. And for a fantasy story, I think this one was done "properly," if you can even apply such a biased opinion. Gunslinger really nailed the tone and setting of a D&D-style fantasy world. I mean, the characters seem to act like I think they should for a fantasy setting, and the magic also works in a familiar way. Although, he doesn't go into TOO great of detail about the characters or world they are in, I think that was probably a good choice because the story is short, and anything more substantial would have just left the reader unsatisfied and wanting more. What's here just feels "right."

I think The Quests's strengths lie in the fact that it does not have a very serious or complex plot. It is a very simple BE story that you can take plainly at face value. The girls in it are going to end up with much bigger breasts than when they started, and each girl gets her fair share of story time. The breast expansion scenes are also very interesting and varied. We basically get to see three growth scenes from three different perspectives, and each girl has a different reaction to her growth that is both sensible and interesting. I also think Gunslinger did the right thing in not building up the villain too much - he is there, and he serves his purpose, but you don't really dwell on him too much or think about him.

All in all, I think this is a pretty cool story. Also, Terribies' art is in my opinion top notch. I look forward to and hope to see him illustrating more stories for the club. The pictures have a very "Super Hero comics" style to them, which is wholly a good thing. I think it fits the format better than some of the other art we've gotten so far. I just can't think of anything bad to say about this story; it was just so fresh to me compared to everything I've read recently. I'm sure my opinion would change if we had a hundred "fantasy clones" floating around the story archives right now, but we don't, and that's why I'm giving it a high rating.

The Quest certainly has the D&D tropes down cold, along with the tell-don't-show aspects of a lot of the genre's writing. It's fun enough for what it is. Don't go looking for in-depth characterization or amusing dialog.
